This Robot's Rare Encounter With a Sperm Whale Gave Me Goosebumps

I can almost feel the excitement that the researchers of the Nautilus Exploration Program must have felt when their robotic explorer met this glorious sperm whale at 598 meters (or 1,962 ft) below the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana.

Here’s what the researchers had to say of the encounter:

The whale circled Hercules several times and gave our cameras the chance to capture some incredible footage of this beautiful creature. Encounters between sperm whales and ROVs are incredibly rare.

The footage below is truly amazing, and the reactions of the scientists are priceless:

The robot called Hercules is a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) designed for ocean explorers, and well suited to study archeology, biology and geology and more in the deep sea down to depths of 4,000 meters (2.5 miles).

BTW: what occurred there was live, even to the researchers at Nautilus, and their comments and excitement are included in the clip. So if your connection can handle it, increase the video quality to 720HD or higher. It's worth it.

BL.

Fantastic. Just fantastic.

Thanks for sharing and thanks, above all, for posting the lovely link.

That was - to use that much abused American term which, yet, in a situation like this, seem just singularly apt - that was, simply 'awesome'.
