Navimote - locate your iphone for free

Just came across this great app on Cydia (in Big Boss repo) called Navimote. It's made by Navizon (not to be confused with Navigon) which makes GPS software for various mobile platforms. navimote is free and provides an excellent means of tracking your phone.

Here is how it works
  1. you install app from cydia. it enables a process that runs in the background. the process is dormant and does not drain much battery since it is not using any system resources
  2. You register online at http://www.navizon.com/products_navimote.asp and generate a token. You then input that token on the device and you are all set
  3. to track the phone, visit the website, log in and click next to your phone. It sends a PUSH notification to the device (it is silent, you get no message or prompt) that wakes up the Navimote service, gets the GPS location and updates the website

I find it to be great tradeoff between locating your device and battery drain.

I'm just always hesitant to put that kind of information in the hands of someone I haven't heard of.

Since it runs as a background daemon it could easily be mining data.

I also doubt it's a Push message. I have been trying to build my own app that does this for my private use (I just can't figure out how to get GPS coordinates from the command line) and I was going to do this...

Create a daemon that sits idle for the most part and pings a server regularly maybe every 10-20 min. It does this NOT with GPS data so it doesn't have to power on the GPS or anything. It just hits the server and pulls down 1 bit. 0 or 1. If it's 0 then it just goes back dormant. If it's 1 then it locates it's GPS coordinates and uploads it back to the server.

I was just going to have the daemon be a .sh script and do the bit checking via curl from my home computer acting as a web server and then send the GPS coordinates over an SCP connection. I was also debating having special bits that the phone can receive so I can remotely clear my phone or backup all data remotely.

Seems like a neat program though! I definitely like the idea!

I share your concerns, anyone else have any positive or negative experiences with this app or the group who created it?

Seconded, I agree it sounds amazing:)
I just don't know how long we have to wait until some positive reviews come in
 
I tried it.
The only notification I received (not a push notification) was after my phone received the first token, was to allow the Navimote website access to GPS data.

I think it has a slight battery drain, but not too bad.
 
Thanks for sharing about Navizon's Navimote. I currently use Cerebro (another free alternative).

The Navizon web site responds much faster than Cerebro's and looks quite a bit more polished.

Nice to have another free choice.
 
Installed this on a 3GS iPhone this morning and has been working like a charm so far. No noticeable slowdown or battery drain thus far and working as advertised. Seems like a great free app!
 
Anyone try navimote on an iPhone 4 or iOS 4 yet? Just wondering if it still works as well as it did on 3.x FW.
 
Do you have to leave GPS on all the time? It does not appear to be able to find me after I entered my device and the key and everything.

The $10 fee is for navimote or for the navizon utility? I don't see any mention of the fee on their website regarding navimote and it is still working fine/free on my 3GS with 3.1.x FW. Their website appears to say it requires 3.x FW, so that explains why it doesn't work on my iP4 w/ 4.0.1 FW.

Intresting that explains the issues I was having. I am going to give iLocalis a try.

I was wrong. After I signed up they pushed the "Premium" version on me which has a fee. There is a "Lite" version that is free.
