There is an iPod board but I doubt many in there would care at all about this. Just wanted to pass this info on and see if anyone else does this. I found out that any version of iTunes that supports the iPod will work with the 2nd or 3rd generation models too. Usually iPods will not work in any capacity with older iTunes versions, but these ones seem to work with any version past 2.0.
I make this thread partially just to publish this finding and also to ask anyone who owns an iPod Classic 4th gen, color or monochrome screen to try plugging it into iTunes 2 or 3. I have both models but with failed HDDs, so no dice on testing this. My suspicion is that the monochrome will work and the color will not. It seems like the software on the first 4 iPods are identical overall allowing this compatibility overlap. Useless in practice but IMO a very cool discovery.
