NEC 1300A DVD-R/RW Drive and iDVD

I have an NEC 1300A internal DVD-R/RW drive and was wondering if it will work in my G4 with iDVD. If not, is there a way to get around it such as putting it in external case and using it as a Firewire / USB drive?
