Necessary to put in DFU for 3.0 upgrade?

Hi:

I plan on upgrading to 3.0 firmware, jailbreaking and then using ultrasn0w. I have a new phone with only a few iTune store apps on it. The phone was meant to be unlocked using turbo sim--but that never really worked, so it doesn't work currently. Firmware is 2.2.1 with 2.30 baseband. I have contacts etc. but they are synched with Active Sync so I can lose them.

My question: do I have to put the phone into DFU to upgrade to 3.0 or can I just use standard iTunes 8.2 and upgrade like that with no worries?
