Need a Little Help understanding JB w/4.0.1

Sorry to have to ask this but I have spent a few hours now trying to figure this out. I know someone out there will have an answer straight away for me.

I have currently a jail broken and unlocked 3GS that is currently not a working ohone, but has a sim, is registered to me, mobil line is just dormant. with the following:

Firmware:
4.0.1
BB:
05.13.04-6.4_M3S2

For the live of me I can not figure out how to get to this up to 4.1 or 4.2.

and remain unoicked so I can use this phone outside the us on trips. The only reason I really want to update is for the bluetooth.

I have read all the sites, have downloaded pawnage, and redsnow and both of these did not work with itunes, so I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Appreciate some direction with many thanks.

If you have the SHSH saved for 4.1 you can create a custom ipsw in PwnageTool (v4.1.2) to upgrade and preserve the baseband.

I've tried this. States pending TSS.

I tried to create a custom ipsw and when I tried to use itunes to update with the custom it would not allow me to do so. Hence my confusion.
 
Steps:
1) Create or find custom 4.1 firmware file (one that keeps current baseband).
2) In Tinyumbrella, make sure you have 4.1 SHSH files saved, and then, select "TSS Server..."
3) You must use Pwangetool or Redsnow and put the phone into a special DFU mode.
4) Through iTunes, restore from the custom firmware file from step #1.
5) On the phone, with Cydia, install Ultrasnow to unlock.

Looks like you could only saved 4.2.1 because that's the only one Apple is still signing / sending out. You were too late in trying to save the others. Thus, you will only be able to restore / install 4.2.1.

which is the current version right?

which can be JB and unlocked now right?

On 4.2.1:

1)Create (pwnagetool) or find (google) custom 4.2.1 firmware file (one that keeps your current baseband).

4) On the phone, with Cydia, install Ultrasnow to unlock.

**Note: JB is untethered for old bootrom 3GS and tethered for new bootrom. Google if you want to find out which one you have.

Do I update from 4.0 first then do this?
 
It gets past the apple authorization now but seems to get hung up in the middle of the restore.
how long should this take?

EDIT:
Its moved on finally!
Now we will see if it worked.
