I've recently discovered that my SuperDrive kicked the bucket, and after doing a bit of search, it appears that many people on Apple's site are having the same issue where the drive stops reading DVD's (backups).

Would any external drive, for example by HP or LiteOn work with the iMac to read and burn DVD's and CD's? (+/-R) or would I need some special kind?

Any external drive will work (apart from the Apple one apparently).

I use an lg external BR writer.

I've been checking through NewEgg and most drives only list Windows and Linux on compatibility list. Might end up going with Kanguru which is listed as OSX compatible.

Also found this which is very afforded and according to a few revies I found it works on MacBook air so I don't see why it wouldn't work on an iMac http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106329
