Until Apple made the (stupid) decision to replace the whole iPod Touch 4G series with the iPod Touch 5G 16GB I was determined on buying an iPod Touch 4G: I need it just for testing software and I don't need great performances. I also need an exploited chip (like the A4) in order to jailbreak easily or to use SSH ramdisks, and, finally, I want to install iOS 7.

Now, I'm quite sure that iOS 7 won't be available for iPod 4Gs, and they are becoming old. On the other hand, an iPod Touch 5G, with the A5 chip, can't be jailbroken easily and I cannot do many hacks.

What should I do? Buy the iPod 4G anyway or buy the 5G and wait for exploits?

Apple does a good job of supporting older hardware with updates. It's likely an iPod 4G will be supported with iOS 7, but then you have to wait for jailbreaking for quite some time, until someone finds a bug in iOS 7.

I don't think so. Apple provides updates only for devices that are still sold.

I think the evad3rs probably have the exploits to jailbreak 6.1.3, but they don't want to release them yet so apple doesn't patch them in iOS 7.

You honestly think it's stupid that a device released in 2010 is not getting the latest update? It got iOS 4, 5, AND 6.

Buy the new iPod. It will get an exploit before you know it. Better to test software on a OS version that actually matters the most anyway.

Yeah, I finally made my decision. I'll buy a new 5th generation iPod Touch: hacking can wait. I won't buy it in an Apple Store: here on Amazon it costs less money and reviews are good. Just to let you know, I'll buy a 32GB black one :p

Thank you guys for your help!

How about a refurbished one from amazons warehouse. It is about 25$ less than it new on amazon:

Pick up an iPod Touch 4G if you are only concerned about jailbreaking.

Well, jailbreaking for me is important, but it's not a priority. I think that getting updates is more important, and I thought that the iPod Touch 4G jailbroken can become really slow.
I also though that if I buy it on Amazon, there is a great probability that it won't be updated to 6.1.3 and jailbreak will be possible.

Your requirements most likely can not be met with recent moves by Apple. A4 does not appear to be joining the train to iOS7-ville.

Does this mean that Iphone 4 will also not getting Ios 7? I doubt it, its only 2 generation back. (4s/5) if 3gs got to ios 6 then i expect somewhat for Iphone 4 to at least get the new interface.

iPhone 4s has the A5 I believe. The iPhone 4 has the A4 and will likely be left in the dust - similar to the iPhone 3/3gs cutoff has been.
