Hi, first time user. Please forgive me if this subject is old and worn out or if I break any board rules or protocols. I want to get a Macbook for my son who is 10yo. He will use it for the internet, emails, face time and games. Just the most basic stuff. I plan on getting him a refurbished Mac and he has a $300 limit. So my questions are: (1) Should I get him a MacBook, a MacBook Pro (probably out of price range) or the MacBook Air and: (2) For $300 what should I expect to get for my money (i.e.. version, processor, memory, year and etc.)

Not much at all for $300. and for that money forget about it being refurbished, unless you refurbish it, which escalate the final cost. check out craigslist and ebay, but don't expect much and be prepared for repairs. if the 10 yo REALLY needs a mac, I'd up the budget to $500 and you might find a decent used 11" macbook air.
