Need advice: new hard drive MB 2.1

I have a white macbook 2.1 and i want to upgrade its hhd to 500G 7200 rpm.
So I am wondering whether I can just put the new hhd into my macbook and do the fresh install, then put the old hhd into external enclosure. Once installation finish, can i just migrating everything from my old hhd which is in the enclosure (I have only one computer)? or I should use the Carbon copy to clone all the things.
