I am trying to delete the facebook & twitter apps I have on my imac I downloaded from the app store. I have moved the icons to trash and then emptied trash. However the icons are still present in my app folder. It was suggested to me that I check to make sure permissions are set at read and write. I do that and it automatically reverts back to read only for everyone but the admin which is me. Ive tried repairing permissions and that doesn't work either. I'm running Lion if that helps. Does anyone know anything else I can try. Any advice is appreciated

Go read the FAQs. There is an entire section on the question you have.

Best advice you're going to get.

Try using an app such as appzapper or appcleaner and see if that helps.

Is it asking for your admin password whenever you try to delete the apps?

it wasn't but I just did the manual uninstall thru finder and it did. Icon's are gone now so I assume it worked. thx for the help I'm new to macs and this is the first time I had an issue removing something so I was confused as to why it was not working

Weird things happen sometimes. Generally when any App is installed or uninstalled it will ask for your admin password even if you're logged in as an admin. So not sure what was happening there. Glad it all worked out. :)

I was under the impression that App store apps needed to be uninstalled like they are in iOS.
  • Click and hold on the app in launchpad until it wiggles.
  • Click the white on black x

That's always worked for me anyway. YMMV

In most cases, app removal software such as AppZapper or AppCleaner doesn't do a thorough job of deleting files/folders related to deleted apps. For more information, read this.

The most effective method for complete app removal is manual deletion:

And there goes my reference to the FAQs.
