I need help figuring out how to get a DUAL monitor setup that will work with my current late 2018 MBP (2.6ghz i7)AND that will allow me to swap to a new M1X Max MBP. Currently I’m running a LG 38” (LG 38wn95C) ultrawide monitor. I use this for video editing but I’d like to add a second monitor that I can use vertically for my finder/resources and for editing portrait photos. I didn’t think this would be a complicated deal UNTIL I started looking into how to do it!! So, here I am - throwing myself at the feet of tech experts, which I most certainly am NOT! I really am very limited in my tech knowledge so please put responses into ‘dummy’ format for me, please.
Since I edit mostly 4K video, I definitely want (at minimum) the ability to have 4K 60fps on my monitors. I wish I could get 120. FWIW: Currently I have one USB-c cable running from my MBP to the monitor and I have a Logitech MX keyboard and mouse connected via Bluetooth.
Question 1: Since I’m assuming (from reading other threads) I will need some sort of dock to have two monitors, can I get one that will work with my current MBP and that will work with my future M1X Max MBP? Will it be pretty easy to introduce the new machine to the system once I get it in the spring?
Question 2: What are ALL the parts I will need to connect the 2nd monitor and make this work? I haven’t settled on a monitor yet.
Question 3: Is there any way to increase the capacity to enable both monitors to run at 120fps? Maybe, somehow, adding an external video card as a booster of sorts? Maybe this topic is better left for another day and another thread?
I’m not going to say, ‘cost isn’t an issue’ because it’s always a consideration; but I’m willing to pay what it takes to do it RIGHT and to make it as easy as possible to swap to a newer MBP. Also, IF I had my choice, I’d love to have the option to install 3 monitors. Not that it’s something I’m currently looking to do but you just never know. Lol. No harm in dreaming and trying to keep your options open.
Thanks to anyone that replies!
