So yesterday I went to get a new battery for my Pulsar watch that I got as a graduation gift in 2001. when I bought the watch, I was advised to get a free battery replacement from them every year. I had been taking it to them every year to get a battery replacement. The original owner/person who replaced the batteries died a few years ago, and now other people his wife hire replace the batteries. My watch seemed to be working fine until after the battery was replaced last year. The guy who replaced it last year told me he couldn’t get my watch working again after he replaced the battery. I told him that it was working fine before he replaced the battery. He seemed surprised, and said he would try a different battery. He came back and told me he had a very difficult time getting it to work. He said that at some point some ring on it went missing that helps it work? Not sure. Anyway, he said he had done something to it to get it working...added some things on the inside? Not sure.

It sort of worked last year, but would get off on time. After resetting the time again, it stopped workin again. When I took it in yesterday for its new battery, it didn’t work again. The guy who changed the battery this time (different guy) suggested that a watch of that age had reached it’s expected life expectancy. He said he could order a new movement for it, but that that would be about the price of a new watch.

He let me look at the watches they had on hand. I only really liked two of them, and I decided to go home and think about it. I was wondering if it might not be better to get a smart watch, such as an Apple Watch instead. Most people my age seem to be wearing smart watches now, and I was thinking that I might like the fitness features.

I was looking at the series 6 and the SE watches online, and I am confused by all of the options. I know nothing about Apple Watch bands. I would like at least one band for more dress up occasions, and one for daily use. I am thinking about a rose gold aluminum one.

I have been reading about some of the bands, but could not find very many reviews of long term use. There was one review I found of someone who had a solo loop break on them, and there seems to be some people who have had allergic reactions to it, as well as sizing issues.

Some people stated they had issues with the sports band giving them allergic reactions, too.

Others said they liked the sports loop (it helped them not get allergic reactions), but some found this band sweaty, and that the velcro became less strong/effective over time.

And then there is color....

What are other people’s recommendations?

Try not to go into analysis paralysis here, especially when it comes to bands. :) There are almost unlimited band options, materials, types of closures/buckles, materials, etc. Everyone has their favorites and everyone has at least one style that they hate for whatever reason. The one I hate is probably someone else's favorite, and something I find comfortable might be awful for someone else to wear.

The Sport bands are probably the most popular and most universally comfortable, have been around since day one of the Apple Watch. They will last for years, are easily washable, and really don't wear out. A small % of the population could have an allergic reaction or sensitivity to any product, so I wouldn't worry about that unless it actually happens to you, and in that situation, you can return or exchange the band. I love them, and have several colors.

The metal link and leather bands are popular for a more dressy option, and there's as many styles and colors as you can imagine. All of the Apple branded bands are great quality. The new Solo Loop and Braided Loop bands do require sizing, but the size guide on Apple's website led me to a perfect fitting Solo Loop. I personally don't care for the Sport Loop (velcro fabric) but I don't hate it, it's just not my favorite. Personal preference for style, function, and comfort should drive your decisions. Many of us have amassed collections of many different bands over time and change them out often.

As for the actual watch, I can't help you much because I don't know much about the SE or which features it's missing vs the Series 6 - hopefully someone else can help with that. I have the Series 6 Aluminum, and have had the aluminum version of every Watch version since it was first introduced. I love everything about the Apple Watch, and basically never wear any of my analog watches anymore.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. So you have used several band types, and have none that have broken or worn out with use (at leas that you did not mention).

If the sport bands have been around for years, and people seem to have them last without breaking, that sounds like it might be a good option for everyday use. I will see if anyone else gives a response.

I've had a Apple Watch since 2015 and have had nearly every band option available, from the Sport Loop to the Link Bracelet. They're very good quality and worth the price. No issues with wear, allergies, etc.. You might want to go with a Sport Loop and look at a leather option for dressier occasions. I would even go so far as saying that a Sport Loop in a muted color could work well in nearly every situation. Currently, I'm wearing the Braided Solo Loop and it's very comfortable. Can't say anything about long-term wear yet, as I've only had it for a month.

Sorry to hear about your Pulsar. Those are really cool watches.

when picking body color, think about all the band options before you get it.
My 1st watch was black, looked OK with a black band, or even a black leather with silver buckle, but if you tried something completely silver like the Milanese Loop, it didn't look right to me.
my 2 newer ones have be silver colored.

the sport bands are a good start, and good for daily wear
or also the sport loops, but since they are fabric, they hold onto moisture, something to think about if you sweat a lot or plan to get wet with your watch. If you put on a long sleeve shirt after a shower, the cuff of the shirt will be wet for an hour or 2. also if you get "messy" the sport bands are much easier to clean.

I've even kept sport bands longer than the watch, once when I get a new watch I sold the old watch with the new band.

I've got the braided solo loop now, and it's probably my favorite, since it's the same thickness all the way around , I notice it less.

You can also get really decent non-apple bands for pretty cheap.
I've got a Milanese Loop that I got from amazon, for me it's fine, I'll wear it the few times a year I need to be a bit dressy. I also have a leather band, both were under $20/each.
If I was wearing them everyday, I'm not how they would hold up compared to an apple band, but for a few days/nights a year they are fine.

I generally prefer the sports bands because I exercise every day and thus sweat, and the sports bands are super easy to wash under the faucet with soap and water. I also have leather and braided loops and they are nice for later in the day after I’ve already gotten my exercise, or on days when I can’t exercise for whatever reason, but overall I wear my sports bands the most often. I think they’re a good starting point especially if you have an active lifestyle.

Correct - with my original watch, I wore the same Sport band for months straight, before I got into collecting bands and changing them out often, and with a wash with soap and water now and then, it still looked new.

I have had all the band types available for my AW. They are very good quality and under normal usage have never had an issue with any of them. My personal preference is the Nike sports loops. For me they are the most comfortable. As for wear and tear on a watch, I have never used a screen protector and wear it to work where it gets bumped all the time. They are very durable watches. I have only ever had the black stainless steel watch which you would think you'd have to be careful with. But no it is a tough watch.
