My iMac G5 ambient light sensory hard drive failed. Tried to fix it with disk utility and no go. Tried reinstalling the OS and it failed. Any thoughts on a good hard drive? What type is needed for the G5? Where is the best place to buy? Can I install this myself or do I need to get professional help?

Thanks for your help and suggestions,

Gary

You're quite lucky with that iMac G5.

Any 3.5" SATA drive will work. Make sure to disable NCQ on it. At worst it's a jumper to set on the hard drive.

Thank you for the links. How do you disable ncq? It looks fairly easy to replace the hard drive. I have never done it before. Why am I lucky to have the G5? I do love the computer and the mac OS, but I have had some issues in the past with this computer.

The iMac G5 was the only iMac that had easily replaceable parts.

Like I said most hard drives will have jumper instructions printed on them on how to enable and disable their features.

Thanks.

Any suggestions on brand or where to buy one?
