Need advice on the best way to dictate a lenghty document.

Hi,
I am running Yosemite and my grandfather wants to use the computer to dictate his memoirs. Could be a long one. Can he dictate directly to MS WORD or the Apple equivalent using a microphone?

I have found that recent Apple devices are quite good at getting dictation correct as evidenced by my iPhone 6+

Is it necessary to buy another program such as Dragon?

Is there a must-have brand of mic for doing this sort of thing?

Yes, you can dictate anything you like directly into MS Word using the built in dictation capability of OS X. The first sentence of this post was dictated into MS Word, then copied and pasted here, and the second sentence was dictated directly into this post.
