I have this idea for an iPhone app (which I will not reveal as I reckon it's a good idea!), which will send a couple bytes of data to the server every 10 seconds or so when the app is activated (of course with user permission etc), the server set up receives and stores the data, computes a related value and sends it back. Large-scale calculations working through all the data also take place each day. So the set up will be very calculation-intensive.
My basic plan is to have an external RAID set up with calculation computers attached to it, and one controller computer. I probably won't need several computers at first, but I want to make space for expandability.
Is this going to work with the mac platform? Or will it be much easier going with Linux? I'd rather Mac as I just like their products, but I suppose I need to consider my options.
If I do go with Mac, what's a good starting point? XSan and xGrid?
I have no formal IT training, but I am quite proficient with computers and consider myself very technically minded. I realise it's going to be a bag of hurt and will require me to learn heaps, but I willing. If I get this set up by the end of the year, I'll be very happy!
