Hello everyone,
My Macbook Pro 2012 (Retina) needs replacement obvisouly, despite that it works just fine. Amazing. For 9 year old notebook.
I want to get Mini M1, but still undecided:
- 8 or 16 Gb RAM. My old Macbook has 8 GB RAM (I know M1 chips operate memory in a different way), so might be good idea to get more RAM, since it is not upgradable.
- 256 or 512 GB. My Macbook has 256 GB and it is kinda of small storage, so 512 GB seems to be a better choice. However - I read somewhere that external SSD (particularly using newer than SATA interface) run as quick as internal SSD. I will get one of the docks, designed for mini specifically, which will have standard SATA interface for adding HD as well as NVMe/NGFF storage. Connection will be via USB-C input. So adding a dock with SSD storage might do the trick of expanding internal storage (if speeds for external drive are true).
I am also heard about M1X chip coming, however, minis are late to all updates, so that is not necessarily happens soon (unless announcement in October), plus not every app using Metal, so even better chip won't give that much of an advantage. As well as, I am looking to refurb minis, but there not many BTO (say 16 GB / 512 GB) available now.. With new mini (if it comes out) there is no option for refurbed ones at least for a year..
I am a casual user - no video editing, no highload apps, etc. And I still playing original Starcraft just for fun
Any comments/ideas would be highly appreciated)). Thanks!
