Need expose help

Hi:

First time mac user here with a quick question about expose. Everytime I hit the F9 or F10 key i get an icon that pops on the screen (like the one on the F10 key) only it has a circle with a slanted line in it? Is this an error message? It quickly fades out. All the other function keys seem to be working properly. I went into the preferences for expose and both keys are selected.

Go to System Preferences | Keyboard & Mouse and tick 'Use function keys to control software'.

I'm pretty sure those are the buttons to change the keyboard backlight brightness. You have to hold down fn and press F9 or F10. I was a bit confused as to what it did at first until I happened to try it in the dark.
