I use ontrack in Windows and I am able to recover a large portion of data on damaged HDD, but what is the best program for a Mac?

A previous poster mentioned DiskWarrior, but be advised that DW _is not_ a "data recovery" app (with the emphasis on "recovery"). Rather, it maintains, repairs and rebuilds disk _directories_ -- but does not and cannot recover actual _data_ from a drive.

You should be checking apps such as DataRescue3 and Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery. There's also a newer one called "DiskDrill".

All of the above bypass the drive's directories and can go directly to the individual sectors on a drive, from which they scavenge raw data, and then re-assemble that data onto another "scratch" drive. You will probably lose folder hierarchies in the process, and you may lose some file names, as well.

But they are useful and effective tools "on the Mac side" of things....
