It simply must be the case that this is a common question, but searching has produced only point answers.

How should one setup a collection of macs/home network to allow shared data (photos, mostly) and make it manageable?

-> we're 100% apple - no need to deal w/ windows, linux, etc.
-> I'm willing to spend $$ to fix the problem
-> I'm willing to spend time to set it up, but not make an ongoing career out of maintaining

we have today:
2 MBPs
1 recent mini
1 ipad
2 iphones
1 AirportExtreme w/ disk attached
1 ATV (little black box version)

most important issue to tackle is probably photos...like everyone else, we've got a 10-year history of digital photos that's 10s of GBs, and ~30 MiniDV tapes I'd like to 'rip' and add to that...so 'cloud' storage is infeasible.

Ideally...centralized photo storage. Don't need ability to access the library of photos while away from home, but do need to be able to take 1 or 2 loptops w/ us on vacation, store photos into them along the way, and move them into the main library once we get back home. Would like (at least read) access from all macs (+ipad)?

Will Aperture solve this better than iPhoto? Is dumping the library on the disk attached to the airport workable??

I find it surprising Apple hasn't provided for this - seems like this is what everyone must run into once you buy more than one mac (and surely they like that idea right :)..but it looks like they haven't. So - what is everyone doing??
