I need some advice. I had a working 2008 iMac that has a lot of sentimental value even tho it's just a tool it was my first apple product and it was working perfectly until recent.

I was having problems powering on the iMac, in the beginning I had to keep to power button in until I got the loading screen. Because it wouldn't load anymore by just clicking on the power button. Then it progressed that every time my Mac went to sleep there was no power anymore and I had to restart the whole thing.

I looked it up and found out that it was probably the power supply. The Mac is 12 years old so it was only a matter of time before something failed. I bought a new power supply and when I was replacing it I noticed that something must have happened because the old one was in very bad shape. It also smelled burned so something must have shorted and messed up the power supply.

It was very hard getting the cable loose and here the problem began. If you watch this ifix it video you can see at 4:17 that you have to unplug a small cable. This cable was melted onto the board and I couldn't get it off, after half an hour of trying the cable broke and my iMac was screwed.

I have tried researching which cable this is and where I can buy it. I thought I had found my answer in thinking that is was the power supple cable but upon viewing some videos it seems I'm wrong.

Can someone please help me with figuring this out?

thanks

Ah yes, I believe that small connector will be the temperator sensor for the power supply.

Edit: I have no confirmation this would work, and cannot test this myself since it's the weekend - but if the sensor works the same in the 24" as it does in the later 21.5"+27" models, you should be able to strip some of the insulation off the two wires, connect them together (just twist them together), cover the exposed wire with some electrical tape, and it should work with no ramping fans - and would not have to connect it to the power supply directly.
