need help/advice

today i have noticed for the first time that whenever i plug in my external hard drive my entire system grinds to a halt..im still using osx 10.6.8 & have been using my fantom drive for years with no issues until today..i have to restart my system because just ejecting the hard drive does not work neither does putting it in sleep mode for a while & turning the hard drive on again ..any advice on what the problem could be? thanks folks

Is spotlight indexing the drive? Is it doing a time machine backup?
