I'm thinking of purchasing the macbook pro 13" retina and need help choosing the upgrades. Since i'm a primarily a windows users, my knowledge of mac hardware sucks. But i settled on the rmbp 13, for its lightness, portability, power and resolution. Resolution is my primary concern, because i need space when i program and i hear retina display does not look well in windows.

My usage:
  • Either bootcamping/vming/parallel windows
  • Using visual studio in windows
  • Programming/development
  • Xcode - making iphone apps
  • Unix usage/admining
  • Photoshop
  • Watching movies/videos (1080p/720p)

Which should i choose: 8gb ram or 16gb ram.
Which cpu: i5 2.4, i5 2.6, i7 2.8

Thanks,

If you're going for the 2.6/16GB, Check out Macmall.com.
They may have the configuration you want in-stock.

There is currently a 3-4 week lead time from Apple for the 13" rMBP with the 16GB ram upgrade.

If you're running windows via Parallels then get the 16 gb. I have a 15" and find the screen just barely large enough for working in visual studio or Xcode. I have a 23" monitor at my desk which gives me the needed space. I spent too many years programming on Lenovo 14" screens to go with anything smaller. YMMV if the need for portability outweighs the screen real estate.
