I have been struggling to arrive at a buying decision.

Current setup:
  • 2015 MBP 15" 2.2ghz i7 with 16GB ram and 256GB SSD
  • 4k external large-gamut display via thunderbolt3-to-DisplayPort cable, run at "more space" 3008x1692 and at 60Hz
  • Wacom graphics tablet, external dslr webcam via CamLink4k
  • used in clamshell mode mostly, then as a laptop when travelling

What I do:
  • data science coding - python numerics like numpy, data sets, text and image processing, machine learning libraries like PyTorch - this is slow on my 2015 laptop, have hit RAM limits, fans go crazy
  • video editing for YouTube tutorials - iMovie, very slow exports (2 hours+) and very loud fans
  • recording eg screennrecording with microphone and tablet with Affinity apps .. this makes the fans go crazy and noise ruins some recordings
  • casual YouTube can cause fans to go crazy - even 1080p which my smartphone appears to do without a fan
  • can't hardware decode AVC/h265 video

Decisions made:
  • I'm happy with the M1 single-thread performance as an upgrade for most of my apps and code, which is the same on M1 pro and max
  • 32Gb RAM to alleviate memory pressure, 64 would be nice but expensive - but remember that RAM is shared with video ...
  • 14" not 16" because I value portability. I could go with the 16" and then live with it constantly resenting its bulk.
  • Will get a thunderbolt 4 dock and aim to have only 1 cable into the laptop, with all peripherals into the dock, including microphones
  • All testing/reviews suggest the 32-core Max is definitely not a good fit for the 14", and that Apple also pins its frequency down too compared to the same cpu in the 16".
  • Testing also suggests the bang-for-buck of the 32-core in a 14" case is not worth it.

Help:
  • The 16-gpu-core M1 Pro is a good fit for the 14" chassis, but... the 24-gpu-core M1 Max has more GPU and video decode/encode which will really help reduce those 2+ hours exporting, and potentially help with the numerical computing.
  • Question - The M1 has two methods for supporting numeric calculations, the more general purpose GPU and the specialised AMX. The M1 Max has more GPU cores which will help once Python's libraries are updated (work in development). Does the Max have more AMX capability than the Pro ?
  • Question - How prone to overheating and fan noise is the 24-core in a 14" when doing common tasks like driving an external 4k60 display, watching 1080p youtube, exporting video from iMovie/fcp/davinci ?
