I'm probably missing this somewhere but I have a MP with 8 gigs of ram and I need help dedidcating the ram to fcp studio. I've really just been getting started and I'm not a computer expert by any means. I can only alocate about 2500mb to fcp in the preferences but I know there's a better way to do this.
please help!!

Yes, you can only use 2.5 gb's of ram in FCP, here's how:

Go to Final Cut Pro->system settings/preferences->memory and cache->application, set it to 100%

Motion can eat up all of your ram, it just depends on what you are doing.

I wouldn't worry about the ram, let OSX handle it by itself, if the system needs ram, it will grab what you have.

Why only 2.5gb? I feel like there would be plenty of applications where FCP would run better using more RAM. For instance, real-time renders, RAM-loaded clip previews, complex, demanding, layered edits... What gives?

For what I've heard, FCP can only take 2.5 gb because it is still a 32-bit application, and can't address much more. But don't take me for granted.
