Need Help Formatting a New Hard Drive

I am making my own mini external hard drive. I have a 3.5 external which was already formatted when I started using it. But now I bought a 2.5 case and an internal laptop drive to put in the case. I will use this with my ibook that only has 20 gig storage.

Can someone tell me how you format a drive like this, I have never done this before.
