Need help getting info off old hard drive

Ok so my late 2012 Retina MacBook Pro 15 is dead but I would like some of the files and or software off the hard drive. Can I buy an external enclosure for the old hard drive and remove it from the old computer that wont boot up and read the drive with my new M1 ? If so what type of external enclosure do I need for the SSD?

You can get this enclosure from OWC to use the drive. That model MBP uses a proprietary connector so an adapter or specific enclosure is required.

You might be able to at least start it up in target mode with the Thunderbolt adapter. Does not need to actually boot for that.
