need help getting sound in iMovie. what am i missing.

hey there. i'm feeling like i'm missing something, but when i'm recording with the built in cam (isight) in imovie ("capturing" the video), there is no sound.

i have gone through and looked at all input settings on the mac and in the application. when i pull up the settings box, i can even SEE the sound "bars" go up when i make noise. but no noise in the recordings.

can someone tell me what i'm missing? you can make fun of me later. but can i get schooled on this for now?

and in case you're wondering..

my mac is not muted. it's only while capturing video that there is no sound.
