So I have my Apple TV plugged into a 52" Sony KDL-52v5100 tv, which is also connected to a Sony DAV-HDX277WC DVD Home Theater System, it puts out all the TV's audio. The Apple TV sound obviously goes through this system just fine but I can't control it with the Apple TV remote, it always controls the TV instead.

So I wandered into settings, remotes and devices, and under Home Theater Control>Volume Control, I saw you can learn a new device. I tried it, held the volume up on the other remote and the Apple TV remote, was successful, then did volume down, was successful, named it, saved device, etc. however when I select the Home Theater System, the Apple TV remote still controls the TV volume, not the Home Theater System audio.

What am I doing wrong? The volume control options are "Auto", "Sony Home Theater System via IR" and "TV via IR". Both "Sony Home Theater System via IR" and "TV via IR" do the exact same thing. Control the TV. What gives?

This "Other Remote" that I did the step with only controls the Home Theater System, not the TV at all. So I don't see why this is happening. Please help me

Also the actual remote for the Home Theater System is dying. The volume buttons are all worn out and barely work, the setup was almost impossible to do but it eventually worked. I just really was hoping I'd be able to use the functioning Apple TV remote to adjust the volume instead of the dying remote.
