Need help hooking up old Mac Cinema monitor to mac book pro

I have a 20 inch apple cinema display. The old king that you just plug into the wall and into your computer with no on/off button. I have the adaptor so it can hook to my Mac Book Pro. But it does not turn on. I went into system preferences and into displays and clicked the detect display button but nothing happened. Any help will be much appreciated!!
