So, I have the Verizon iPhone 4, which was jailbroken on 4.2.8 via Jailbreakme.com. I experienced a ton of glitches, namely with the phone randomly shutting down during phone calls or just restarting (sloooooowly) out of the blue. I decided I would try a clean install of the firmware (4.2.8) and re-jailbreak the phone after. I never made it that far. I downloaded the firmware, tried hitting 'option + Restore' in iTunes, and was presented with a message alerting me that the firmware was not compatible with my device. I re-downloaded the firmware from a different location to double-check the file, but with the same result. After perusing the interweb for more info, I was unable to find anything concrete about this issue. I do not have tinyumbrella, openSSH or anything that advanced. I tried downgrading iTunes to version 10.0 (the earliest that recognizes the CDMA iPhone 4), but I get the same error message. I have read that unless I had some code saved in Cydia, I can no longer downgrade my device, and that Apple will block the untrusted firmware file from 'breaking' the phone. If that's the case, I've not made a wise decision in my plan to restore functionability to my phone.

I'm sucking up right now and restoring through Apple to the latest version of firmware. Is there any way to downgrade once I accomplish this task? Thanks for any help.
