Need Help! Loading OSX off USB DVD Drive to MBP

WEll my superdrive is bricked in my MBP, and i have to reload OSX b/c my HDD took a dump tonite. i installed the new hard drive, and i know it is functional , bc when booted it comes to the folder with a ? mark in it. However what keys must i pres to get to a boot bios menu or for it to recognize the external DVD drive so that it will boot off my copy of 10.4 OSX so that it may install.. any and all help is appreciated.. it has been a long nite so far
