need help! Mac cannot connect to Canon ts9020

i bought a canon ts9020 printer. i cant connect my mac to it no matter what i try. its a 2012-2013 mac (all white) but its running 10.12...it wont pickup the printer at all. i have installed the drivers from cannon website..im not sure if i should be connecting via wifi direct, or airprint or whatever...i can connect my iphone to the printer no problem...is there something im missing or not doing? ive tried adding via system prefences with ip address..everytime it just says there was an error no explanation...currently they are connected on same network..i have wifi direct enabled on printer...mac doesnt see the printer

via usb yes..tried ethernet...last night i was to get wireless to work via wifi direct but still cant get it connect to my wifi network and print that wau
