Ok I'm on El Capitan on my 2013 iMac 27". I have my boot camp partition on my internal 1 tb hdd. I'm trying to move it to my external ssd to boot from. I've formatted my ssd to fat32, I have winclone. I tried the migration. It says I have to disable sip. Went into recovery, went to terminal, entered in the command csrutil disable, says command not found. My recovery is still on Mavericks. Do I need to update my recovery?

Also when I went back into winclone now my boot camp drive doesn't appear, just the image I cloned from a week ago. Any help?

Okay, you're not doing anything right at all. First, you can't just install Windows on an external device like that, Boot Camp restricts Windows installation to the local storage drive only. Maybe it is possible to do a hack and get it on your SSD. Second, Windows requires an NTFS partition, NOT FAT32. Third, yes, I think you need a proper recovery version in order to unlock SIP. You don't even need to enter a command, you can disable it in the menu I think. Finally, because of how Boot Camp structures your hard drive (I don't know the details), you can't just clone Windows to another partition, it will NOT work.

I thought u could put bc on an external ssd for boot through thunderbolt?

I have Windows 8.1 right now on my internal bc partition. So at the least my ssd should be in ntfs, I thought I read fat32.

I really thought winclone allowed migration to other drives.

Bootcamp will not work off of an external drive. What I do, and what may be your best bet, is use Parallels to run your windows 8.1 off either the whole external drive or part of the drive partitioned as exFAT. It works great for me when I need to use it. Parallels will walk you through the instructions and you can just choose to install it onto the external drive.

Ah ok bummer. So I guess I'll keep winclone images on an external drive then. I really thought u could boot off external tb drives.

Just an update I got everything to work. Boot camp Windows is now on a 500 Samsung Evo ssd. Boots and works great!
