need help on exporting HD video from iMovie 11

I created a High Definition project by using iMovie 11 but when I exported it, the quality of the video seems to has reduced significantly. Anyone has any ideas on how to export the iMovie video project without any changes in the video quality?

I know some apps like Final Cut will resolve it. But purchasing it seems to be an overkill for me as I would not used it much. Any free alternatives probably?

You may have already tried this, but here goes:

From the iMovie pull-down menu choose

Share then

Export Movie.

In the box that appears go to the Size to Export part and check HD 1080p.

Providing your original movie is in the 16 x 9 aspect ratio then this should be possible.
