I went to Apple store today to pick up new iPhone 4S. Had another appointment so just took the new phone and didn't let them set it up/ synch it with my iphone 4 before I left. Set up the 4S in car and selected iCloud for backup so I could make calls on road. Now I want to transfer all my apps, contacts, etc., from my iPhone 4 to new phone. I have backed up iPhone 4 on iTunes on my MBP. I didn't upgrade iPhone 4 to 5.0 because I have a buyer who wants it at 4.3.3 to jailbreak. Is it okay to connect 4S to my laptop and synch via iTunes even though I chose iCloud for storage? How can I make sure I upload all contacts off old phone? I'm supposed to meet iPhone 4 buyer tomorrow morning to hand off so I want to get everything settled tonight so I can wipe my info off 4 before handing it off.

You can still choose to restore from an iTunes backup on your new iPhone, though if you can do this:

  • Import all of your contacts into iCloud
  • Save Music to iTunes (Transfer purchased items from iPhone)
  • You don't need to do anything for apps, as the cloud will have a duplicate for you.
  • Export/Import all calendar items into iCloud

From there, you can set up as new phone, and manually get things in there. I do not ever recommend restoring from backup, as I've noticed the phone is more sluggish than setting up as a new phone.

You can definitely restore from backup on your iTunes, that will give you all your apps, data, etc. as from the last backup of your 4. Then you can re-configure iCloud on the 4S. The computer doesn't need iCloud for this to work.

Personally I've never had problems restoring from backup, and it is a LOT easier than setting up from scratch. And if you do run into problems, you can always start over without a restore - so I see no downside to starting from a restore.
