Hello,
Thanks for dropping by. I've been having some problems with my 8/9-month old AluMB (10.5) recently and banging my head against the wall trying to solve them, I've googled them, searched on the forums but no luck so far. I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me with the bizarre issues I'm having.
1. iSight Problem: My built in iSight just stopped working one day. No warning or anything, I checked in the USB section under system profile and it'd just vanished! I don't move my mac a lot, in fact, I can't even remember when was the last time I took it out, I don't shake it, my power outlet is properly grounded, so my first guess was it would probably be a software related problem but I failed to find anything regarding that on the internet. I really don't thing that the camera connector inside fell out of place and caused this issue. I tried SMC reset but it didn't work either. Could an OS reinstall solve this? Not that I use the webcam on a daily basis, but I'm just concerned that it might lead to other problems in the future.
Note: I have Windows XP parallels from time to time.
2. USB Problem: A few days ago, my 3g modem (Huawei E162G) started slowing down, when I say slow, I mean really really slow, around 1/2kbps. It can connect to the net alright, but it can't seem to go over the 1-3kbps mark. I tried reinstalling the software that came with it but it didn't solve it. First I thought it might be the modem itself, so I tried another modem but same problem. I then tried removing the software/app, I even removed the modem scripts that it installed and reinstall them all over again but it still wouldn't work. I even bought a data cable for my phone and tried tethering but still, the same problem. Could this be a problem related to messed up OS files? Should I reinstall Leopard? The USB ports otherwise work as they should though, it can read HDD and memory cards, connect to my phone and all but it just can't seem to handle my 3g modem.
3. Performance Issues: The overall operational speed has reduced, not noticeably, but I can tell it has. iTunes takes countless icon bumps to fire up and all. Should I try reinstalling leopard?
I also have another concern that I'd like readers to take note of, this is my first mac and fortunately for me, the distributor I bought it from installed a legit copy of Adobe Creative Suit CS4 on it. They didn't gave me any backup or installation DVD for the suite though. Is it possible to backup a few applications before trying an OSX reinstall? I know there is an option called Archive and install but would that leave my applications untouched? But in that case, would the archive and install help solving the problems I stated above, given that this method keep the files intact? I really don't want to send it to Apple, has anyone ever experienced any similar iSight or USB issues? I know there was a well known iSight-plug-going-lose problem on the white macbooks, but on the Aluminum ones? Could my issues be hardware related? Since iSight also works via USB, is there a chance that there might be a problem with the whole USB circuit even though the blutooth (which is also USB) and the USB ports apparently works just fine?
