Howdy all,
Anybody looking for a good system design challenge? I think I have one for you...Here's what I have:
What I'm looking to buy/upgrade:
So as you can see, I'm looking at setting up a Home Theater PC with my Mac Mini, and using the EyeTV to record content. Here's what I intend on using each of the pieces mentioned above to do:
Mac Mini: Always on and stationary. Used to record HDTV via EyeTV. Needs to have access to all music + recorded video, and will be used to check for and download new podcasts. Connects wirelessly to router.
MacBook Pro (Not yet purchased): Upgrade from ~3 year old Mac Mini. Will be my primary machine, and mobile (i.e. traveling, not just within the home). Needs to have a copy of all music, photos, and podcasts. Ideally, I would like to hook my iPhone up to either the Mac Mini or MacBook Pro, and have it sync, but I don't think you can do that. Will not always be powered on.
Old Laptop: Windows machine that should be able to access content via the network.
External Hard drives: Space to be used as efficiently as possible. 120 + 200 GB drives are full, and 1 TB drive currently being used as Time Machine backup for Mini. Also require it to backup MacBook Pro when I decide to purchase. Would like to reduce non-backup duplication of media as much as possible (hence the "space the be used efficiently" requirement).
SO! My question to the forum is this: How can I setup my system to have the Mac Mini have access to all music + video at all times(and update the iTunes library accordingly with new podcasts), the MacBook Pro to have
a copy of the iTunes library (including new podcasts) + all photos, have my iPhone sync with one of the two Macs (if only one, the MacBook Pro, because it would ideally have all updated podcasts), AND have everything backed up somewhere in the case one of these HDD dies?
Thanks!
