Need help switching phones (complicated)

I am receiving an iPhone 6 tomorrow under someone else in my family plan. He is trading in his current phone for credit, I am getting the iPhone 6+, and my iPhone 5S goes to him. He will be out of town and ideally I'd like to set up my phone # with the iphone 6, but not activate the new phone under his number until he gets back so he can still use his current phone. Does anybody have any tips on doing this? I'm afraid if I screw up and activate his phone, he won't be able to use it. Or I might brick the phone because I'm a different phone #?

I am on Verizon and my phone does have a SIM.

Need help switching phones (complicated)

Before turning the 6+ on for the first time, you should be able to put your 5s SIM in the 6+, and be good to go.

I had a 5 that was not yet due for an upgrade and my wife had a 4s. We upgraded her 4s to a 6, then switched out the sims. Now I have the 6 and she has my old 5.
