Need help understanding how to clean up mess I made with iTunes library and exter. HD

Ok, so here me out,

I read a post on this forum about how to move iTunes library to external HD. It didn't work. It keeps asking me to locate songs. I basically need to know what files iTunes is looking for when it opens and how I can hide the music currently on my external, so that I may try again with a clean slate so to speak. As it stands, I have tried a couple times to make this happen and each time just a portion of the library is working.

Did you do it like this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449?viewlocale=en_US ? I think the "consolidate" part is where you may have tripped up. Try moving your library the way Apple says to do so and let us know how that went.
