Main workhorse and desktop is iMac Intel running 10.6.6 ; it also has VM Fusion emulation w Win7 used for a specific genealogy software only. Also on the network are a PC laptop w Win7 and two streaming devices for TVs.
Internet sharing is fine on all devices. Problem is getting the three OS to recognize one another. I've tried many solutions, and which computer is "blind" has varied from one solution to another, but I can't seem to accomplish 2-way access, much less 3-way.
Based on tips in a thread at MacRumors I just changed the workgroup name in Prefs>Network>Airport>Advanced>WINS to match the name on my Win7 laptop. The current state of things is:
The laptop now recognizes and has access to all folders on the iMac, incl Apps>Fusion folder but NOT Win7 or my user folders in the emulator Win7.
The Win7 resident in the iMac emulator sees both Mac and Win side on the iMac, but does not see the laptop at all. The emulator Win7 calls its 'network' with local Mac OS "HomeGroup," not workgroup.
Lastly the iMac Finder>Network window lists itself and both Win7s--laptop and emulator--but none of the three has any contents at all and on double clicking either PC icon "connection fails." Interestingly, in the same Mac>Network window with the two PCs the iMac identifies itself as a 'PC Server' since changing the workgroup name.
I'd call myself a 'power user' of Mac, not afraid to mess around in Terminal and such, but knowledge of Windows is only 'good' and of networking is 'foreign land.' Sure would appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks in advance.
I should add that I'm using an Airport Extreme, wireless connections to all devices. Also, the laptop saw and could print to printers w USB connections to Mac BEFORE the changes noted above to workgroup name but now they're gone.
