need help winxp or vista for student 7 upgrade

hey so a family member just got a macbook for xmas and needs win7 on it.... since we are in school we are eligable for the win7 $30 upgrade, but since its a mac upgrade wont work, i need to first install windows via bootcamp then upgrade to 7.. i have copies of vista and xp i can use, but vista isnt exactly lets say ms certified... should i use the vista then upgrade, or can xp upgrade to it also... keep in mind i do not need to keep any files, its a brand new computer and we want a brand new windows 7 install. thanks.
