I got back to my house this weekend to discover a new modem for my cox internet and telephone (just got their telephone service).

They gave me a handy motorola sbv5220. Basically it has voip built into the cable modem and a built in battery backup.

For some reason the cox (contracted) installer split the coaxial line so my slower, older modem could remained hooked up.

I took the liberty of unhooking it and setting up my AEB with the moto modem. One problem, I cannot get to the internet with this thing (using neighbors wifi, don't kill me please!).

The AEB shows a green light as does the modem. However my IP address begins with a 169, which means no outside world. I can still access my printer and hard drive.

I have it setup as such, cable going from old modem to AEB goes from AEB to new modem, modem connected via same coaxial cable as old modem. Why doesn't it work? I was getting an invalid IP address before, but not anymore, but that has to be the problem

I did the required unpower everything (for an hour, and I did pull out the battery backup). What shoudl I do?
