I currently have FileVault turned on on my 10.6.4 early '08 MBP. I'm hoping to replace my original 200GB HDD with a new one. The problem is that when I tried to use SuperDuper to clone my drive, my home folder (on the new hdd) was blank which I'm guessing is due to FileVault.
I tried to turn off FileVault but it needs an additional 50GB of space which I don't have on my existing hdd. I tried to follow the instructions here, per Apple but no luck. (I copied all my home items into a spare folder on my 1TB external HDD, set up the new account and tried to paste them from the external to the new account's home folder but:
1) When I tried to copy and paste my home items onto the new account, it says something like "can't modify because they are in use"
2) When I tried to simply open each folder and copy the items from the old folder on the external into the new folder, the contents aren't showing up. For example, pictures are showing as thumbnails but when I open them they are blank.
I'm a little lost...hopefully someone can help me out.
EDIT:

I was able to free up room by backing up my iTunes folder to my external, deleting it from my internal HDD and then after FileVault was turned off, I moved it back to the internal HDD.
