Need help with imac stuck installation

What happens is I am informed automatically of software updates for microsoft programs or itunes. I download the software successfully and then restart my computer. A screen then appears with the picture of the hard drive and horizontal line indicating installation/configuration success. The blue bar moves about 5mm along the blank horizontal line (underneath states “configuring installation”) and then nothing more happens. I have left the computer running all day is this mode with no success. I then have to power off at the wall.

are you talking about booting into XP/VISTA or OS X? The Microsoft mention is throwing me off.

stuck on "cofiguring installations" when istalling updates.

How did you fix it? I have the same problem.
