Need help with install of OS X on a replacement drive

My friend has just replaced his HD in his 15" Aluminium Powerbook 1.5GHz.
Each time we start up we get the mac folder/question mark symbol.
When we try the install disc the apple logo comes up and freezes indefinitely.
We can mount the drive through firewire on my iBook and we have partitioned and formatted the drive for PPC Mac OS extended journaled.
A question: is it possible to install the OS (10.3) from the iBook onto the Powerbook?
Or might anyone have any tips otherwise as to what might be the problem?

Boot the iBook off of the install disc, with the PB connected by FireWire. You should be able to choose the PB as an installation destination.

Yeah, that's what i was thinking of doing but i couldn't remember if the install process gave a destination option (don't wanna wipe the iBook!)

It should give you two destinations, the iBook and the PowerBook.
