Need help with itunes account and changing email?

Hello, I am getting rid of .mac and changing my email address. It does not have a place, that I can find, to change my email address in iTunes. When I try to change it on Apple's site, it says that changing your Apple ID is not allowed. It says to open a new account if I want to change my email addy. What happens to my music and everything I have purchased from itunes?

Anyone have any experience with this?
