About 3 months ago, my nephew spilled water on his early 2014 13 inch macbook air. It was turned off fairly quickly and allowed to dry. About a week later, they tried but were unable to boot the machine. They sent it to me to look at.

I found a little corrosion on the I/O board which I cleaned with alcohol but for the most part, everything looked okay. Strangely, upon plugging in the magsafe adapter, the machine booted right away. The only issue I could identify was that the battery needed to be replaced.

After installing a new battery, the computer booted and the battery charged to 100%. I was again able to use the computer without any issue including restarting and sleeping. However, if I select shut down, the computer will not boot. The magsafe adapter is orange or green depending on how full the battery is.

Aside from the new battery, SMC reset, and the SMC bypass, also tried resetting pram.

These are my other observations:
1) If I leave the magsafe attached, the computer will not boot with a SMC reset or the SMC bypass.
2) To get the computer to boot again, I have to unplug the magsafe, disconnect the battery, and replug the magsafe adapter. But again, if I shutdown, no boot thereafter unless I unplug and replug the magsafe.
3) I ran techtool Pro 8 and all voltages checks out.
4) I ran apple diagnostic and it came up with the code PPT004.

I have ordered a new battery. However, shouldnt the MBA boot without a battery installed. Any ideas on where to go next would be helpful.
