Need help with new SSD

Hey guys I am having the hardest time transferring the data from the existing hdd to the new ssd. I tried searching the topic but there seems to be no consensus answer. I have a crucial 256gb and I also purchased the apricorn usb to sata but when I plug it in it is unrecognizable. Please help thanks!!!

It's unrecognizable where? DisK Utility should see it as an unformatted disk. From there, format it and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone it.

the disk that came with apricorn is worthless and it had me download a program called super duper. Is the carbon copy a free download?
