I currently have a 2009 macbook pro.
That is showing its age.
new apps are not compatible and so on.

i am able to get a 2014 macbook air for under $1,000 refurbished.

my question is how long would a 2014 macbook last, technology wise?

Is it a good purchase?
Since a brand new macbook air is way more expensive.

I don't believe the 2014 MBA has a retina screen, so even if you got 2-3 years using it, your eyes might not like it very well. I would also be wary about a refurbished device that was not refurbished by Apple. I can understand wanting to keep the cost under $1,000 though. I looked up the new MBA prices in Canada, and yes, $300 more can be a stretch.

Are there any Apple resellers there who might be offering a discount on the 2020 MBA?

If you don't mind the butterfly keyboard, you might be able to find a 2018 (and maybe 2019, I don't remember) MBA for $1000 or less in Apple's Refurb Store, although there are none at the moment (in either the Canada or US Refurb Store). You've probably been checking that site anyway, but thought I would mention it in case you hadn't. It may be worth checking back there often if you're not in a hurry.
